Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opening batter Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments made by captain Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made this message in several interviews in the wake of his team's loss in the second Ashes series versus the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, the captain stated he had allowed his message to "drift around" among the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

However, after the opener made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "weak men" comment subsequent to his side were beaten in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards went on a holiday to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before this match, he said his players had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay alive in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the guidance from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," noted the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of something special going into this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket on day four came during a decisive triple-strike by Australia spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – left England 207-6 in pursuit of a notional target of 435 runs.

This means, the home team require four wickets on the last day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 advantage after three Tests.

Defeat will extend England's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes series defeat.

The current battle will be completed in only eleven days of cricket – after England losing the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," said the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a formidable side. It was always going to be hard coming here against them. They were the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

Although Crawley's performance in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his immediate future in the England team, Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 in England's second innings on Saturday, adding to his modest returns versus the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and averages 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

But, the opener said any notion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "the media" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is talk from the outside. There's no chat of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," he finished.
