A minimum of thirteen passengers killed and ninety-eight wounded in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and management of the country's key government projects.

The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a route constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” affirmed the country's president.

The leader confirmed that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the immediate past president, whose presidency finished the year before. This rail line was intimately linked to his administration's economic vision for the southeastern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The construction of both rail lines was overseen by the nation's military, marking a dramatic expansion of its role in public projects. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, beating forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently raised ongoing apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an previous accident this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-lethal derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the tragedy, the chief of a key rival party called for an urgent pause in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This stoppage was proposed pending a comprehensive technical review. The party emphasized that the tragedy "calls for swift accountability."

In reply, the national leader insisted that the train had been functioning in complete adherence to all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and operation of these strategic undertakings.
